Sherwood (Mirco Salvadori)

The Wire (Lara C. Cory)
“..by turns uplifting and reflecting, serene and rivelatory….uncomplicated beauty of Ballerin’s score itselfdemands attention.”

A soundtrack by a European music for a film shot in Africa with Japanese artwork, the internationalist spirit truly inhabits Alessio Ballerini. Wiwanana‘s soundtrack is one of gentle electronics and warm arpeggios, Ballerini’s music conveys the sunshine and lens flare that defines the film’s palette.

FLUID RADIO – TO ITS BEGINNING TO ITS END: A SHORT DISCUSSION WITH ALESSIO BALLERINI
30-05-2013
Hi Alessio, you’ve just released a new album on the Italian netlabel Laverna. Judging by the title, I thought this was going to be a circular loop based album. It’s not as simple as that though, is it?
That’s correct. The work is a concept album, and circular loop based. The music in the downloadable files is the soundtrack from an exhibition “to its beginning to its end” held last year with Chiara Forti, at the gallery Adiacenze, in Bologna. The exhibition was divided into 4 environments, with the music split in 4, one track per room. It represented the cycle of life, from birth to death….

“This was the first time you played your project Sleephonia live. Can you explain the concept behind it?
Sleephonia is an audiovisual alienating work in crescendo, which takes us on a journey through the city of Rome from darkness to daybreak. We recorded both the audio and the video at night while the city was “asleep”. We wanted to give a different point of view of Rome, with no people and no traffic and above all the encompassing deafening silence of concrete….”

Aips – Paesaggi sonori per pastificio_lab
25-07-2012

The Silent Ballet 2011
Alessio Ballerini – Music from the puddle
….Its intimate nature reflects the warmth of a family home: happy children, rustles of domesticity, and the tapping of gentle rain.  A church bell tolls, but the cello sounds the call to worship. In this sonic world, holiness seems to be defined not by a building, but by human connection and an appreciation of one’s natural surroundings…..by Music from a Puddle, we’ve returned to solid ground.

Headphone Commute 2011
Alessio Ballerini – Music from the puddle
….For Italian ambient and drone artist, Alessio Ballerini‘s six-track EP, this particular experience is a must. Layered with field recordings, each track is an ode to a rainy day, forming a perfect soundtrack “for the puddles that form, and for the reflected realities found within them.” Gentle synths swell and recede among the delicate electronics, acoustic treatments, and occasional minimal percussion by Michele Alessandrini, carried forth by strings, piano, and guitar, to create short vignettes for this Music From The Puddle….

Alessio Ballerini – Music from the puddle

Komakino 2011
Alessio Ballerini – Music from the puddle
That means, each piece, – 75, more precisely, – is something unique, like – potentially – a polaroid.
And that’s what it is, – a soundtrack for these polaroids shot by Colin Herrick, – and each snapshot speaks peacefully, through an instrumental phonetics, sometimes with grave tones (Zeit – pt. 2), creeping into the subconscious of the listener, – a language written by Ballerini, – made of airy sounds, blended with field recordings and guitars like they’re breathing in and out.
Newest Ballerini‘s record enjoys the symphony of a rainstorm, mirrored by electronics, synths, piano, minimal percussions, processing the ignored everyday Nature’s mysticism (Serene) with the joyous wonder of the newborn (Zeit – pt. 1), rarefied layers of slow-going melodies, a cascading bath of sounds (Il est temps) which try to find a way in your soul. Once it is in, you’re detoxified from the ordinary insensibility.

Blow up 2011
Alessio Ballerini – Music from the puddle

Alessio Ballerini – Music from the puddle
“Is Imagination something only relevant to the sphere of the unreal and imaginative world or should we take imaginative dimension in every interaction even real ?” (Jean Baudrillard)…

Norman records 2011
Alessio Ballerini – Music from the puddle
… On the CD you get 6 tracks of field recordings, synths, piano, guitar and all kinds of business. Alessio is essentially creating a pleasing sort of ambient music with neo-classical hints and tones to it but it’s made interesting by the array of field recordings used. How the instruments and field recordings are blended is superbly done.
Phil gave this 4/5.

Fluid radio 2011
Alessio Ballerini – Music from the puddle
This newest , and extremely lovely work from Ballerini finds him at his moodiest best. As the first piece begins, a stately synth intro melds with the rain as it begins to fall and overlap with the sounds of children at play, which in turn slowly fades into a gentle drone as the rain subsides. Like a rainy day, these six pieces transition in tone and intensity forming a sort of quietly drenching ambiance. With violin, processed guitar, and subdued percussive motifs, and the synths, Ballerini leads us by the hand, and senses through this day of his…making us feel as though we are here to share it.

Alessio Ballerini – Blanc
Alessio Ballerini is one of those few brilliant italians (Fabio OrsiStefano PanzeraClaudio RocchettiFabio Perletta,Attila Faravelli and Nicola Ratti, ..) who know how to vehicle a basically noise-driven sound katharsis and canalize it into an eerie flowing current of drones.
Blanc is a free-download release (available here), coming with 15 drawings making the substance of two animation videos (Blanc/Noir), – inspired by the climate evolution of recent years on Greenland.
Actually ““Blanc & Noir” is also an installation that shows the process of the work’s formation, as well as that of the drawings and the videos derived from it.”, an exhibition which has been presented on 21st November 2010 at the gallery in Via Magenta 15, Ancona, Italy.
The whole release is easy to put on repeat, such its beginning and ending share a common perceptive liaison.
The Small Sea and The Great Ocean, track#1, sees also Christian Fennesz involved in its astral musicality (live recorded at RomaEuropa Webfactory 2010); Noir gently balances minimal notes of piano and a growing obscure background shapeless cloud of feedback, while the album’s title track, Blanc, is a disarming and celestial ambient, soothing, multilayered carpet of guitar tones: again, put this track on repeat, in a silent room, and you might reach nirvana.
Lociverba is a shoegaze, visionary track, drum less, fully mesmeric and powerful of a kind of oustanding energy, which first has an impact on you, then it goes in and out through your body. Peaceful, yet, scented with a sinister feeling here and there.
The final track, Everything Else, – a slow, piano outro, – leaves you petrified in front of the impressiveness and majesty of the damage done to Greenland, probably.

Rockerilla 2011
Alessio Ballerini – Blanc

Alessio Ballerini – Blanc
The privilege, the pleasure is mine… . Zymogen is back with its new notch, Alessio Ballerini`s brand new heavy album Blanc. The coverprint with a snowy mountain peak…what is it up here to be referred actually? As it is obviously known “Blanc” does mean as “white” in French, so is it possible to have somehow a reference to the highest peak in the Europe? Why not, though in fact, the album concerns on climate changes regarding the melting of the ice sheets of Greenland. 5 tracks are appeared here to be sounded really warm and comfortable, though, it is full of ghosts and ghouls, which, however, are not used to be frightening occurences. The whole one might be reminiscent of borealic space of Tim Hecker, endlessly snowy landscapes, chaotically swirling airy vectors and silent whirls of the storm. Here you can relax for listening to hiss-infused mini-orchestrations, electro-acoustic trash-y clangors, minimally sounding piano loaded modern classical pieces. Could you imagine that a kind of (beatific) shit and a piece of beauty are rolling alongside to get finally joint together, and as a result, delivering a hallmark about an exhilarating sound example in the end of 2010. By the way, Ballerini is helped by Canenero, Gianni Pavan, and Christian Fennesz (indeed, by this famous österreicher Fennesz).

Alessio Ballerini – Blanc
Yesterday as I gave thanks by downloading and listening to free netlabel music, I listened to Alessio Ballerini’s Blanc. What can I say other than I was right; Blanc is a fantastic ambient album that deserves a place on your portable listening device. Ballerini, an Italian sound artists, has released a few solo records and several collaborative works as well as working in the field recording and soundtrack realm.
Blanc is a mixture of field recordings and ambient, put together as both a concept album and a installation piece. The download comes with two videos and several drawings as well. Given Ballerini’s extensive collaborative work, it’s of no surprise that several of Blanc‘s tracks include other musicians and sound artists.

Agniworld 2011
Alessio Ballerini – me And
“Me And” is the album by Allessio Ballerini, released on Somehow Recordings, and which is sure to conquer your hearts. It starts with the track called “Half Water”, built of rainy and fresh-aired field recordings and heavy, but tender and smooth bass blows, increasing their strength with the lapse of the piece; also here you can hear a flickering background drone – a radiation of comfort, kindness and serenity. This “entrance track” politely and thoughtfully involves you in the rest levels of Ballerini’s atmosphere. The next track, which entitles the whole work, is probably a result of guitar processing with gradual succession of gentle chords and permeating soft noise. The third piece, “Movement Two”, is likely to be connected more with air and wind, because it has features of blowing, rather than flowing – it has another nature of motion – it is ethereal and tenuous, which is more characteristic of gas condition. Track number 4, “In All Of Us”, is represented by 7 minutes of low drone with subtly manifesting changes and oscillations. “Sun Of Venere” has some kind of lo-fi design, though it still has brilliant and pleasant sounding; you find here different textures – plain drones, splash-likes squeaks, and powerful wall of sound, enveloping all of your essence in a layer of warm and light cloud. “Movement Three” has some kind of vocal inclusions or something resembling them, embedded in water-like sounds and slow waves of drones. The concluding “You” is constructed by the layer of soft noise and subtle ambient melody, obscured by the noisy fumes and trying to make its way through this dense and white barrier. The whole impression, made by this album is really great and unforgettable – it lets you experience new dimensions of sound and see new horizons of imagination. So, have a listen to “Me And” by Allessio Ballerini.

Autres Directions 2011
Alessio Ballerini – me And
Me And, du jeune designer sonore romain Alessio Ballerini.
Méconnaissable (Movement Two).
Sept plages.

The Silent Ballet 2010
Alessio Ballerini – me And
Ballerini has been around for a while but Me And is only the second solo release from the Italian sound artist.  However, it is a wonder that he isn’t better known in the field of experimental electronics, as this album is a gem.  By manipulating his guitar through a variety of effects, and cushioning the sounds on a bed of field recordings, Ballerini goes for a different approach than his predecessors.  This album is more concise and the moods and atmospheres more varied.  Deathly silent one moment, crackling with vibrancy the next, Me And carries a real depth.  (Check out the tired and yearning organ underpinning the digital insects on “Sun of Venere”).  Think Fennesz, Fabio Orsi, Keith Fullerton Whitman… think Alessio Ballerini.

Alessio Ballerini – me And
From the very first track ‘half water’ through the brilliant ‘in all of us’ and to the sublime ‘you’, Ballerini shows the listener his strength of keeping one’s loyalty to an incredible album. Its massive strength for me, is its different pace, but that stillness remains constant.

Alessio Ballerini – me And
…..M83′s Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts as well Stars of the Lid are not far in terms of galaxy and energy, – as well as Fabio Orsi – these people are sound cosmonauts, Their spacecrafts travel through the infinity of a common route: Ballerini doses multilayered melodious carpets with echoed guitars and drones, eerie and airy synths, manipulating audio waves and frequencies. It comes out a harmonic experience emerging from the ambient noises He creates, gently blissed-out and wide spacey (In all of us)……. studing the low-radiations coming from the far Sun of Venere, its intriguing colours, not visible by the naked eye, and mesmerising effects after a long exposure to it (Half Water): like for pinhole photography, – You can’t say You take a snapshot, there’s nothing instant in its immediacy with pinhole photography, – but what comes out from a long exposure is a harmonious whole of instants and the sum of their infinite essence.

Alessio Ballerini – me And
Lush sound design, deep drone & ambiance from this talented producer. Long lingering washes of sound & gentle crackle give way to a track which demands the title “post-shoegaze shimmer of loveliness”. This tune radiates both warmth & power, it fluctuates between neo-classical style drone & epic post-MBV style fuzzscapes. How much fun can you have with longingly sustained notes & blankets of digital static? Some of these sort of releases leave me stuck for words but this often has that grand, ascending quality which can take you up to the skies & leave you floating helplessly & happily up there. This definitely comes across as one of the more spiritual & fully realized drone/ambient releases we’ve had in for a while – quietly powerful music that literally carries you through different dimensions within the space of one short movement. The relatively long gaps between each track are very welcome as they give you a chance to absorb the peaceful waves of noise from the previous number before welcoming in the next ponderous introduction into the unknown. Really quality gear!

Alessio Ballerini – me And
Alessio Ballerini‘s latest solo work, he also performs with the experimental quartet Beurk, is a work of contrasts. Opening with the simply beautiful Half Water, the album shifts back and forth between light and dark throughout. Title track Me And is a tense affair while In All Of Us throbs and rumbles mennacingly. It’s the sound of the monster underneath the bed. The album takes flight again in Sun Of Venere, a flittering and dreamy piece which seems to rise in altitude as it progresses.
